AI predicts 70% of earthquakes in China test – ST

Researchers have developed an AI algorithm that was able to predict nearly three-quarters of all earthquakes when tested in China, in what could be a breakthrough for emergency services around the world, SciTechDaily reported.

Experts at the University of Texas trained the artificial intelligence with seismic data and taught it to recognize statistical irregularities that researchers had found in previous earthquakes. The story on the tech news website continued.

The team said it had created a weekly forecast in which it successfully predicted 14 earthquakes within about 320 kilometers of the estimated location. and with almost exactly the calculated performance.

“Predicting earthquakes is the holy grail,” said Sergey Fomel, a member of the research team. “We are still far from being able to predict every place in the world, but what we have achieved shows us that a problem we thought was impossible is, in principle, solvable.”
