Are you having trouble finding afternoon care? You are not alone

SAN ANTONIO – Finding affordable childcare can be difficult. As children return to school, after-school care is crucial for working families.

The YMCA of San Antonio provides afterschool care for 69 schools in 7 school districts in the region.

Here is a list of the districts:

  • Boerne ISD

  • New Braunfels ISD

  • SCUCISD

  • La Vernia ISD

  • Southwest ISD

  • San Antonio ISD

  • Private charter schools

The YMCA serves about 4,000 students through its program. The fee is about $88 and Y members receive a 10% discount.

Shannon Gowen of the Y said they are conscious of the families they serve.

“Usually these people, mom, dad and guardians, both work in the home. So there is a need for childcare,” she said.

Because of high demand, there is a waiting list for the program. The areas with greater need are SAISD and New Braunfels ISD, where they could help families if they had more applicants, Gowen said.

“If someone is looking for a part-time job and enjoys working with children or is a retired teacher, we are still looking for people,” she said.
