Bicyclist from Huntington Woods dies in collision with carriage on Mackinac Island

A 77-year-old Huntington Woods woman died Wednesday in an accident involving a carriage and bicycle on Mackinac Island, officials said.

Police said they were called to the area between Main Street and Bogan Lane at around 2:15 p.m. because of a collision between a carriage and a bicycle.

According to preliminary investigations, a cyclist travelling west collided with a coach travelling east.

According to officials, the cyclist was seriously injured in the accident and taken to a hospital in Petoskey, where she succumbed to her injuries.

They also said the accident was still under investigation. No further details were released.

Last month, Michigan State Police officials said the number of bicycle accidents in the state increased 10% to 1,480 accidents in 2023 compared to 2022, when there were 1,340 accidents.

However, according to MSP, the number of fatal bicycle accidents fell by 33% in 2023, to 24. In comparison, there were 36 in 2022.
