Active search underway for suspects in connection with violent knife incident in Newark

Authorities in Newark are conducting an active manhunt for suspects involved in a stabbing that occurred in a residential neighborhood early Saturday morning.

The Director of Public Security, Fragé, is asking the public for help in finding a male suspect connected to the attack.

According to a statement from Director Fragé, the incident occurred around 5 a.m. in the 700 block of South 12th Street.

The victim, who was travelling with a male and a female companion, was approached by a group of three men and three women.

The group reportedly made inappropriate advances toward the victim's female companion, which escalated into a physical altercation.

During the altercation, the male suspects took off their belts and began to hit the victim and his male companion.

One of the attackers pulled out a black carpet knife and stabbed the victim before the group fled the scene, running north on South 12th Street toward Springfield Avenue.

The victim lost consciousness and was found bleeding heavily. He was taken to University Hospital, where his condition is currently stabilizing.

A second man involved in the altercation also suffered a minor cut.

Criminal police are currently searching for the suspect responsible for the stabbing, who is described as a Hispanic man wearing a black ski mask, black sweater and black and red shoes.
