Prosecutors present graphic evidence at the end of the first week of the murder trial in Reno

The first week of Todd Tonnochy's murder trial is coming to a close as prosecutors try to convince the jury that the 40-year-old man shot and killed 18-year-old Hailey Nieto and should be charged in her death.

During the trial, Tonnochy's defense attorneys argued that the shooting of the mother of two children was accidental.

Jury selection began on Monday, and jurors heard testimony called by prosecutors throughout the week.

Investigators say Tonnochy shot Nieto on March 21, 2023, in an apartment at the Siegel Suits Nevadan in downtown Reno and then disposed of her body in a remote area near Cold Springs.

During the trial, prosecutors showed graphic autopsy photos showing that her body had been mutilated so it could be folded into a travel bag.

Surveillance video shown at trial shows several people entering and leaving the apartment after the murder. Tonnochy and another man are seen in the video pulling out a blue duffel bag similar to the one investigators said Nieto's body was in. Two days after her murder, motorists in the Cold Springs area found her body in a duffel bag and other evidence.

On Wednesday, Daniel Graham testified on the witness stand that he was in the room when the shooting occurred. He said he was sitting on the bed next to Tonnochy when the shot went off. Graham said Nieto was standing on the other side of him when the shot went off, hitting her in the face.

A security camera just outside the apartment Graham was renting caught a gunshot. Then someone screamed, “Oh my God.”

Both Nieto's and Tonnochy's families have been in court since the start of the trial, which is expected to last 10 days.

Tonnochy was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Midland, Texas, a few days after her murder.
