Kai Liam Nix | Fort Liberty soldier charged with false statements and arms trafficking released into mother's custody

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – A Fort Liberty soldier accused of lying to military authorities about his ties to a group that advocates the overthrow of the U.S. government can live in his parents' home during trial, a federal judge said Thursday.

US Judge James Gates ordered the release of 20-year-old Kai Liam Nix into the custody of his mother – the result of an agreement between the prosecutor and Nix's public defender for house arrest.

Nix, an active-duty soldier, was indicted last week and arrested on four charges, including alleged arms trafficking.

Authorities allege that Nix made a false statement in his 2022 military security clearance application by claiming he had never been a member of any group dedicated to using force or violence to overthrow the U.S. government. Nix, also known as Kai Brazelton, knew he was a member of such a group, the indictment says.

The indictment did not provide any details about the group, and no details of the charges were given during Thursday's detention hearing. Nix was also accused of dealing firearms without a license and selling stolen firearms.

Robert Parrott, Nix's public defender, declined to comment after Thursday's hearing.

As part of the release order, Nix is not allowed to access the Internet and is monitored via GPS.

Under certain circumstances, he can leave the family home in North Carolina. The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Department are investigating the case.

If convicted, Nix faces up to 30 years in prison.
