Rochester police chase ends in fatal crash in Brighton, NY

A police chase that began in Rochester ended with a fatal crash in Brighton on Thursday afternoon, according to Rochester police.

Rochester police were called to Maria Street, near Clifford Avenue, around 3:15 p.m. to investigate a call of shots fired in the area. They encountered a teenager who attempted to drive away but crashed the car. He then led officers on a brief foot chase before jumping into another vehicle, said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department.

Three teens fled in the stolen car and officers “engaged them in a chase” through the city and into Brighton, Bello said. The chase ended at the corner of East and Linden Avenues when the teens were traveling south and collided with another vehicle at the intersection. An elderly man in that vehicle died at the scene, Bello said.

The teenagers, aged between 13 and 18, were also injured in the accident and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of “a number of fairly serious injuries,” Bello said at the scene on Thursday.

The New York State Police assisted the Rochester Police Department in the pursuit and is assisting them in the investigation of the fatal accident. A handgun was seized during the investigation.

The RPD has notified the New York State Attorney General's office of the chase and fatal crash. The Attorney General's office will lead the investigation into the actions of RPD officers and state police in connection with the chase and crash, Bello said. The RPD's Major Crimes Unit will also investigate the three teens and the fatality.

No further details were disclosed.
