Whitmer speaks out in support of Harris in speech to DNC

MICHIGAN – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer pledged her full support to Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday evening.

Whitmer, co-chair of the Harris-Walz campaign, portrayed Harris as someone who understands Americans in general and can lead the country.

Whitmer briefly shared her story of caring for her mother, who was battling brain cancer, and described the life experience of those she fights for: “People who are just trying to make it.”

“Kamala Harris also knows who she is fighting for. She cared for her mother, who also battled cancer. As president, she will fight to lower the cost of health care and elder care for every family. She has lived a life like ours. She knows us,” Whitmer said.

On the other hand, Whitmer said Donald Trump does not understand the average American and the challenges they face in their daily lives.

“Do you think he understands that if your car breaks down, you can't come to work? No! His first word was probably 'chauffeur,'” Whitmer said. “Do you think he's ever had to take items out of a shopping cart before going to the checkout? And do you think he's ever even been to a grocery store? That's what the chauffeur is for.”

Whitmer concluded her speech by saying that no one knows what the next four years will bring, but the nation needs a leader Americans can trust during a crisis that is disrupting everyday life.

She asked, “What if it's that man from Mar-a-Lago?”, a reference to 2020, when then-President Donald Trump referred to Whitmer as “that woman from Michigan.”

“I know in a crisis we need someone strong enough to come up with a plan, to tell the truth and to bring people together,” Whitmer said. “Now, before the crisis, we have a choice. Why not choose a leader who is tough, tested and a real go-getter?”
