I-25 closed after accident with several injuries near Pueblo

Southbound Interstate 25 is closed near Pueblo on Friday after an accident involving military vehicles left several passengers hospitalized.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the interstate is closed between exit 110 for Pinon and exit 104 for Eden, about a mile north of Pueblo.

Around 4 a.m. Friday morning, Colorado State Patrol officers responded to a crash on southbound I-25 north of Pueblo, state officials said in a news release.

The accident involved a Ford Expedition that struck a military Joint Light Tactical Vehicle with a trailer, the press release states. The JLTV was traveling with other military vehicles from Fort Carson at the time of the accident.

Paramedics took several people from both vehicles to hospitals, but the extent of their injuries is unknown, state officials said.

According to state officials, the left lane of southbound I-25 was initially closed due to debris from the crash. Police later closed the entire southbound I-25 to investigate and clean up the crash.

No expected reopening date was yet known for Friday morning.

All military personnel and vehicles involved in the accident were stationed at Fort Carson, about 40 miles north of the crash site, state authorities said.

Motorists should avoid the area and take alternate routes if possible, CDOT officials said. A detour is in place at Exit 108 for Purcell that will take motorists off the interstate, around the crash scene and back onto I-25 at Exit 104 for Eden.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
