Man admits killing Ventnor's grandfather as a teenager

The accused teenage killer pleaded guilty to the premeditated murder of his beloved Ventnor grandfather in 2018.

Angelo Delgado, now 22, was a teenager when he shot 61-year-old Sunil Edla in front of his house and stole his car on November 15, 2018.

He was arrested in Atlantic City after the surveillance center tracked him using his parked car.

In 2020, an appeals panel overturned then-Family Court Judge Susan Maven's decision to keep him in juvenile detention.

He pleaded guilty on Thursday to premeditated murder, which refers to a death that occurs during the commission of another crime.

Delgado is said to have fled a youth center at the time of the murder. He had lain in wait and shot the man, who was on his way to work. He had probably taken his car to avoid having to ride his bike in the rain.

As part of the agreement, he faces 30 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Delgado has celebrated six birthdays since his arrest, and his problems continued even during his detention.

He was accused of assaulting an employee at the juvenile detention center where he was previously held before being transferred to the Atlantic County Justice Facility at his request.

Juvenile defendants whose cases have been transferred to adult court may remain in a juvenile correctional facility because of their age unless the state requests a transfer.

His mother, Susana Fischer, stated that he had his reasons for wanting to be transferred to the adult facility at the time, but declined to comment on those reasons.

When commenters on social media raised concerns about the then-teenager's safety in an adult facility, Fischer said her son knew “how to protect himself.”

Instead, there appear to have been further charges against him and at least one person was injured.

When Delgado appeared in court in October, he wore a splint on his left arm.

His attorney told the judge her client's arm was broken and his elbow was shattered. She said she had asked the Atlantic County District Attorney's Office to file a motion to transfer his client.

Delgado was charged with aggravated assault on a correctional officer a month earlier, according to court records. It is not clear whether he was injured at the time.

The incident that led to his injury is currently under investigation, Atlantic County spokeswoman Linda Gilmore told BreakingAC at the time.

Nothing was made public as part of this investigation.

Last month, Delgado was transferred to the Cape May County Jail, where he currently remains.

The verdict is scheduled for September.
