Woman accused of killing 5-year-old boy in Rochester fire pleads not guilty after arraignment

Rochester, NY – One of the women accused of setting a fire in the city's northeast area last month that killed a 5-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty to the charges in her indictment.

Tiakayla Hendrix, 21, and Taquida Hendrix, 31, were charged Tuesday with murder, arson and assault in connection with the death of Malakai Stovall.

According to police, the sisters intentionally set fire to the porch of Stovall's Portland Avenue home using a flammable substance around 2 a.m. on July 29, trapping Stovall on the second floor until firefighters were able to rescue him.

Stovall succumbed to his injuries later that week. Two firefighters were also injured in the fire.
