Chicago Bears safety Douglas Coleman III has been released from the hospital after sustaining an injury during a tackle on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell in the third quarter of Thursday's preseason game.

Patrick Finley from the Chicago Sun-Times reported the update, noting that Coleman is “running around.”

According to ESPN's Adam Teicher, Coleman was placed on a mobilization board by medical personnel and loaded onto a stretcher before being transported to a local hospital.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said after the game that Coleman was able to move his extremities and gave a thumbs up before being carried off the field.

The play occurred as Powell was running near the sideline and was spinning to avoid a tackle. Coleman hit him with his head in the middle of his spin and fell to the turf.

Players from both teams gathered on the field and knelt while Coleman was loaded onto the stabilizer and ambulance.

Coleman returned to the NFL in January when he signed with the Bears. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2020 but was released before the start of the regular season.

The 26-year-old moved to the Canadian Football League in 2021 when he signed with the Ottawa Redblacks. He appeared in 22 games over two seasons and recorded four sacks and three interceptions in 2023.

Coleman is fighting for a spot on the Bears' roster. He has played in each of the last two preseason games and has recorded three total tackles and a forced fumble.

Before beginning his professional career, Coleman played four seasons at Texas Tech from 2016 to 2019. He was selected to the All-Big 12 first team his senior year.
