7 famous country artists who aren't from the United States

With themes like country life and American pride, one might think all Country artists come from the USA. But you would be surprised!

In fact, quite a few country artists come from Canada and Australia.

Country Hall of Famer Hank Snow was actually born in Brooklyn, Canada. He grew up in poverty and pursued his musical dreams to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Jimmie Rogers. Snow moved to the United States after signing with RCA's U.S. subsidiary in 1949.

He played on the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and his career took off, with hits such as “The Golden Rocket,” “The Rhumba Boogie,” and “I'm Moving On.” He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in the United States and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Keith Urban is another great artist who is not from the USA. He was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia. After musical success in Australia, Urban moved to Nashville in 1992 and formed the band The Ranch.

The band had moderate success, but had to temporarily stop performing because Urban developed an illness that affected his voice. In the meantime, he played on many famous albums for artists such as Garth Brooks, the Chicks, Charlie Daniels and others. After recovering from the vocal injury, Urban released his first solo album in 1999 to great success, followed by his legendary album Golden Road.

Shania Twain is another legendary country singer who was not born in the United States – she was actually born in Timmins, Ontario, where she returned in 2010 to carry the Winter Olympic torch. In 1991, Twain was offered a recording contract in Nashville and applied for immigration status in the United States. In 1998, Twain and her producer/ex-husband moved to Switzerland. Twain owns many homes around the world, including in Las Vegas, Ontario, the Bahamas, and Corseaux.
