Man Utd star Amad mourns tragic death of his mother with emotional statement | Football | Sport

Amad announced the tragic death of his mother on the eve of Manchester United's Premier League match against Brighton and Hove Albion. The 22-year-old winger shared the heartbreaking news on social media on Friday evening and received an outpouring of love and support from all corners of the fanbase.

Having played a prominent role throughout pre-season, Amad is set for a breakthrough season for United, three years after his £37m transfer from Atalanta.

He started both opening games against Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley and against Fulham in the Premier League opener last week at Old Trafford.

However, the Ivory Coast international's participation in the Amex Stadium on Saturday is questionable as he is mourning the loss of his mother.

He informed his followers of the news on Snapchat and posted a picture of his mother carrying him with the caption: “Rest in peace mom, may Allah forgive you.”

Amad has made no secret of the pair's bond during his time at United, previously claiming she burst into tears on the phone after he made his debut in 2021.

“It was all so unbelievable. After I made my United debut against Real Sociedad, I called my mum after the game and she was in tears saying she couldn't believe it,” Amad told the club's website.

“It was an incredible feeling for me because playing at the highest level only happens once in my life.

“Mom was really proud of me. She always believed that I would make it to the top. But she always told me to stay humble, work hard and never give up.

“When she saw me play for about eight minutes, it meant everything to her. We couldn't believe it.”

Amad has made 23 first-team appearances since his debut against La Real, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

The Red Devils' number 16 spent an unsuccessful loan spell at Rangers in the second half of the 2021/22 season, scoring three goals in 13 games.

But in the following season he made a name for himself in English football, scoring 14 goals and providing four assists for Sunderland in the Championship.

Amad has not looked back since and now appears to have overtaken Antony and Jadon Sancho in Erik ten Hag's wing rankings.

This season he will share duties on the right wing with Alejandro Garnacho, but can also be used in attacking midfield.
