Inmate charged with assault after punching correctional officer at Lincoln prison, police said

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – An inmate has been charged after assaulting a Lancaster County Corrections officer on Wednesday.

According to court documents, 32-year-old Donald Johnson was charged with assault on an officer, criminal damage to property and assault with bodily fluids.

Lincoln Police were called to the Lancaster County Department of Corrections for a reported assault. According to LPD, an inmate attacked a correctional officer and destroyed several items.

When the officer arrived, staff provided video of the incident. In the video, a man, later identified as Johnson, can be seen walking up to the CO desk, reaching across the desk, grabbing a computer and slamming it to the floor. Johnson destroyed several computers and a touchscreen monitor.

Johnson then grabbed a chair and threw it at a television. At about this time, several COs entered the area and attempted to arrest Johnson. While attempting to arrest Johnson, he struck a correctional officer in the head multiple times, according to an affidavit.

Johnson was eventually arrested. While escorting Johnson, he spat at another CO.

Johnson was initially charged on June 23 with criminal damage over $5,000. He is accused of destroying several pieces of Bryan Health hospital property and assaulting a hospital security guard.

Johnson's bail is set at 10% of $7,500. His next hearing is scheduled for August 27.
