The Chicago Bears experienced a scary situation in the third week of the preseason when defensive back Douglas Coleman III fell to the ground on the field early in the second half after breaking a tackle.

Training staff immediately attended to the situation and paramedics attended to Coleman. He was placed on a backboard and taken to the hospital. The good news indicates that Coleman was moving his limbs and giving a thumbs up as he was taken away on a backboard.

Coleman was back in the hospital the next day and appeared to be in good spirits. He was now officially released from the hospital.

According to Chris Emma on Bernsy Holmes, “Bears safety Douglas Coleman was released from a Kansas City hospital and is heading back to Chicago today, Matt Eberflus told @BernsyHolmes. He is walking and in good spirits after suffering a horrific injury last night.”

Head coach Matt Eberflus said Coleman was released from the hospital and is heading back to Chicago. He was taken to a hospital in Kansas City as the Bears played the Chiefs during their final preseason game.

Scary injuries are common in the NFL, but the good news is that Coleman does not appear to have suffered a life-threatening injury.

Coleman joined the Bears in January after spending the last three seasons in the CFL with the Ottawa Redblacks.

Coleman was initially signed by the Denver Broncos in 2020 after going undrafted, but was released in September 2020. Shortly thereafter, he found his way to the CFL.

During his time with the Redblacks, Coleman was initially on the practice squad for the 2021 season. He was released in June 2022 and returned to the practice squad shortly thereafter. Although Coleman played as a safety, he was renamed a linebacker for the 2022 season.

Coleman struggled with multiple injuries in 2022, but recorded 18 tackles and a sack in five games on defense.

Despite not getting a real chance on an NFL roster, Coleman fought for a strong safety position in the Bears' defense. He appears fourth on the list behind Jaquan Brisker, Elijah Hicks and Tarvarius Moore.

The good news is that Coleman is happy and healthy and we hope he can return to the field soon, but with training camp coming to an end, he may not make the 53-man roster.

Coleman could make the Bears' practice squad, but he would have to be completely healthy to do so.
