The worst version of these famous wrestling stables

From a booking perspective, the main goal of any stable is to turn one or two superstars into genuine singles stars, and if you're lucky, you'll get a lot more than just one or two, so it's easy to understand why you'd try to either slot a young up-and-coming star into a faction or hope to revive a career.

The 10 best faction leaders in WWE history

Although there has never been much emphasis on factions in WWE, there have been some great groups with outstanding leaders over the years. Here are the best in WWE history.

You could either merge factions into one giant superteam or even continue the stable after spinning off a superstar. Unfortunately, this plan doesn't always work out so well and leaves a black mark on the legacy of said faction. This applies to WWE and elsewhere.

UPDATE: 08/23/2024 5:30 PM EST BY ETHAN SCHLABAUGH

Factions are essential in professional wrestling. They can be seen as a way to bring in younger talent and create fresh new stars, like Evolution, or they can be used to dominate a company and take over the business, like the nWo. However they are used, most of the time they are successful to some degree. Some factions have become bigger than anyone could have imagined, but that success doesn't always last. Factions like the Bullet Club or D-Generation X are great examples of something lasting longer than perhaps it should have. This leads to new groups forming as people are constantly leaving and new ones joining, forcing us to pick out some that have had less than stellar iterations.

At one point, Bullet Club was arguably the biggest deal in wrestling, selling shirts and merchandise at Hot Topic and breaking out of the wrestling bubble that most fans were in. What it is today is a far cry from the strength of the original lineups.

Previously he had leaders like Prince Devitt, AJ Styles and Kenny Omega, now he is one of the tag members of Los Ingobernables de Japon at the top. Things have improved since EVIL is no longer the frontman of Bullet Club and now leads its sub-faction “The House of Torture”.

Not only was this the worst Horsemen lineup in history, but when Paul Roma was part of the Four Horsemen, they were actually the Three Horsemen. But when Tully Blanchard wasn't allowed to return, a proper Horsemen reunion fell by the wayside.

The former Power And Glory member was somehow chosen as a backup plan, even taking into account the fact that Ole Anderson was present at the one performance, leaving the Four Horsemen without the fourth member they needed.

On the way to WrestleMania 15, the seemingly unthinkable happened and Chyna turned against her longtime friends in D-Generation X to side with The Corporation. Then came the double whammy. At the Show Of Shows, Chyna turned her back on The Corporation to reunite with Triple H, seemingly making DX whole again.

Later that evening, both turned against DX. This also led to the faction's weakest moment in history. The Outlaws and X-Pac had a close bond with Kane. But Billy Gunn soon turned against his DX brothers and left Pac and Dogg to fend for themselves.

With so many guys in the nWo, it's certainly not surprising that there are a few duds here and there. But there was also an entire team dedicated to duds. Most of the cool guys left to form the Wolfpac, the rest stayed with Hogan and essentially formed the B-Team.

The 10 best factions in WWE history

The WWE has been home to some iconic factions over the decades and they are some of the best in the promotion's history.

The group was led by former Harlem Heat member Stevie Ray and featured almost every midcarder, including Bryan Adams and Virgil. It's pretty bad when all they did was argue and admit that they weren't part of the elite team.

On a more subtle level, the Nation Of Domination is perhaps the greatest faction the WWE has ever created. It is led by the first black World Champion Faarooq (aka Ron Simmons) and includes two other Hall of Famers, as well as Owen, the versatile DLo Brown and a certain “Most Electrifying Man In All Of Entertainment.”

But the group's original lineup was nowhere near as strong – Faarooq, Savio Vega and Crush in one of his many gimmicks. The addition of The Rock to the faction was the push it needed to take off during the era of Faction Warfare in WWE.

When you see what Judgment Day has accomplished—Damian Priest winning the World Heavyweight Championship, Dominik Mysterio becoming WWE's biggest heel, and Rhea Ripley dominating the women's division—it seems a far cry from what the group started out as when Edge was in charge.

Although Edge was an incredible heel at the peak of his career, a heel run after his return from a career-ending injury and with fans wanting to enjoy every moment with the Rated-R Superstar wasn't as successful. Add to that the dark, brooding vibe the group wanted to create, and Edge felt out of place.

Although it was filled with a number of less than good midcarders, The Undertaker's Ministry Of Darkness at least had a compelling storyline. The stable was hell-bent on taking over the entire WWE, and The Undertaker was converting people in droves.

But when the Higher Power was revealed and the whole thing became another Austin vs. McMahon chapter, the stable looked flat. Turning two fairly strong factions into a confused mess wasn't working and would be wiped out in a few months.

TNA has been criticized several times for not getting a storyline right, but one that the company seemed to enjoy quite a bit was that of the Main Event Mafia. Legends like Sting, Kurt Angle, Booker T, Kevin Nash, and Scott Steiner went through the roster and were quite popular, so much so that TNA brought the group back for a revival years later.

Why the Mafia vs. The Frontline main event is the biggest feud in TNA Impact Wrestling history (and why it's overrated)

Some fans consider the main event Mafia vs. The Frontline to be the greatest feud in TNA Impact Wrestling history, but others say it is overrated.

Sadly, it just wouldn't be the same as the majority of the original faction left TNA and a young Magnus and a past-his-prime Samoa Joe filled the gaps that were left.

We're talking about the worst versions of stables here, but that doesn't necessarily mean they were a bad version of the stable. But compared to Edge, Christian, and Gangrel, the Hardys' attempt to act like menacing vampires just didn't work as well as they did before.

The separation from Gangrel would be a blessing, as Jeff and Matt would become one of the greatest tag teams in history and even have their own successful faction once they brought in Lita to form Team Xtreme.

When the Harlem Heat reunited after Stevie Ray's time in the nWo, all seemed right with the world. They even brought a female Heater with them, like Chyna in Midnight. Stevie Ray, however, would have none of it and turned against his brother.

He aligned himself with Big T (Ahmed Johnson) and brought in a new manager in the former Clarence Mason. Stevie Ray doesn't have the best track record when it comes to factions that his brother isn't a part of, and replacing Booker T with Ahmed Johnson wasn't the right move.
