The Marion County Jail is exceptional, has impressive food and brilliant correctional officers

To the Editor:

I had an exceptional experience in the Marion County Jail. I don't really take credit for going there with a good attitude, I have mental health issues. I quickly learned that I got what I projected. My correctional officers were brilliant. Their professional training helped keep me and most others safe even though we were overworked and understaffed. Personally, I couldn't imagine stopping a large number of women from fighting.

This clean and well maintained facility houses and rehabilitates so many people like me who self medicated with illegal and non-illegal drugs that drove me to the brink of insanity. I had easy access and was given advice on how to best use my time.

Due to mental health issues and my poor choices, I was hungry and homeless. When I was there, the food was just amazing! Fresh garden vegetables and the meat was portioned. Seriously, I felt like it was chef-prepared most of the time.

Being able to participate in the work program is truly a gift from God. I was able to develop a healthy mindset that gave me hope during detox. Additionally, because of my good behavior, I was privileged to be able to work as a screen printer at CTAE. I was also able to participate in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). And church services too!

I apologize for blowing them up, BUT it is the TRUTH. As unfortunate as it is, this facility with all of its problems cannot save everyone. It is up to each individual. I am just sorry they cannot speak for themselves, but I will. These dedicated professionals who cared for me in almost every way treated me with dignity and respect.
