Eight dead in attempted revolt by ISIS prisoners in Russian prisons

According to officials, ISIS prisoners in a remote Russian prison attempted an uprising on Friday that left eight people dead.

The four terrorists were gunned down by snipers in the IK-19 Surovikino prison in the southwestern Volgograd region after they took four inmates and eight prison guards hostage and fatally stabbed four of the guards, the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) said.

Three other security guards were taken to hospital with injuries.

Snipers from a special unit “neutralized” the inmates, who identified themselves as IS fighters, with “four targeted shots,” the agency said.

Videos allegedly taken from the crime scene show the knife-armed attackers pacing in a prison yard while their victims lie in pools of blood.

Some shouted that they would take revenge for the persecution of Muslims.

The coup attempt began during a meeting of the disciplinary commission, the BBC reported, citing the FSIN.

According to some local reports, the director and his deputy were among those arrested.

The killed attackers were identified as Ramzidin Toshev (28), Rustamchon Navruzi (23), Nazirchon Toshov (28) and Temur Khusinov (29). All were from the former Soviet countries of Central Asia, local media reported.

The FSIN denied that the attackers had taken control of the entire prison, stating: “The criminals took hostages and occupied a single room on the territory of the colony.”

The uprising is the second such incident this summer. Six IS prisoners had captured two guards in a facility in the neighboring Rostov region. Five of them were killed and the survivor was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

IK-19 Surovikino is a maximum security colony with about 1,200 inmates.
