Grand jury indicts fast-food customer for allegedly murdering employee over food order

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A grand jury has indicted 45-year-old Monica Williams in the shooting death of 48-year-old Anitra West. West was killed last month while working at Church's Chicken in Orange Mound.

Williams was arrested on Monday, July 15, days after a warrant was issued for her arrest on charges of first-degree murder.

Memphis Police were called to Church's Chicken at 2963 Park Avenue on Monday evening, July 8, after an employee called 911 to report that her co-worker had been shot outside the restaurant.

According to Memphis police, Williams was in the restaurant's drive-thru when she and West got into an “argument over a food order.”

Williams drove off but reportedly returned to shoot West, who was outside the restaurant getting some fresh air.

West died in the hospital.

“I'm a better person because of her,” said Loranzo West, her ex-husband and high school sweetheart. “That's what we'll miss the most, because wherever she went, she influenced everyone.”

According to police, the two women did not know each other.

According to court records, Williams was sentenced to three years in prison in 2009 for beating and stabbing another woman.

She remains behind bars without bail and is due back in court on Friday, August 30.
