19-year-old found shot dead in field; suspect arrested and charged, police say

COVINGTON, Tenn. (WMC) – Covington police have arrested a suspect in connection with an early morning shooting.

On August 23, officers responded to a call reporting shots fired near Haynie and Murphy Streets in Covington.

When they arrived, they found a man lying in a field with numerous gunshot wounds.

Despite his injuries, the man was conscious when officers arrived.

The victim was later identified as 19-year-old Jamal Houston of Covington, Tennessee. He also admitted to shooting back at the suspect during the incident.

Upon further investigation, officers later confirmed that the shooting began on Simonton Street and continued on foot across Murphy and into a field between Haynie Street and Hall Alley.

The suspect was identified as Cabias Purham, 21, of Covington, Tennessee.

The motive for the shooting is still being investigated.

Purham was taken to jail and his bail was set at $150,000.
