Portland Public Schools Teacher Arrested for Luring Child: ‘Sexual in Nature’

A Portland Public Schools teacher is in custody after allegedly attempting to entice a child to meet for sexual purposes.

The Portland Police Bureau reports that on July 18, 2024, a detective with the Yuba City (California) Police Department contacted the Portland Police Bureau's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit regarding an undercover chat operation.

During this operation, the detective, posing as a 13-year-old child, communicated with a man from Portland.

According to PPB, the conversations initiated by the Portland man were sexual in nature and included discussions about meeting the “minor.”

Craig Douglas-Meyers, 38, of Portland, was identified by law enforcement as the suspect. Douglas-Meyers is a teacher at Hosford Middle School in Southeast Portland.

On Friday, August 23, police served a search warrant on Douglas-Meyer's home at 7 a.m.

Douglas-Meyers was arrested and taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of soliciting a minor.

“Due to Douglas-Meyer's brazen conversations with someone he believed to be a child and his employment as a teacher at Hosford Middle School in southeast Portland, investigators fear there may be additional children with whom he had inappropriate contact,” the PPB said in a press release.

PPB releases Douglas-Meyers' photo to identify possible victims.

“It's very rare that someone gets caught on the first time or the very first occurrence of committing or engaging in this type of criminal conduct,” said Sergeant Trevor Tyler of the PPB during a press conference. “So yes, we believe this was going on over a period of time.”

Anyone with information regarding Douglas-Meyers or this case is asked to contact Officer Aaron Rizzo at [email protected] and reference case number 24-803066.

Portland Public Schools issued the following statement to KATU:

“The Portland Police Bureau has notified the district of its investigation and PPS is cooperating fully with its efforts. We have no information to indicate that PPS students were affected. Providing a safe and supportive environment for all students remains our top priority and we are committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety and integrity.”
