Fatal police-involved shooting on Wymore Road in Winter Park under investigation: FDLE

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday afternoon on Wymore Road in Winter Park.

As a result, Wymore Road between Lee Road and Kennedy Boulevard was closed to traffic during rush hour.

According to the FDLE, detectives with the Altamonte Springs Police Department were conducting a crime investigation shortly before 1 p.m. when they spotted a suspect's vehicle driven by Richard Phillip Randall Jr.

Randall, the only occupant, stopped the car on the street and suddenly got out. He ran toward officers with an unknown object in his hands, investigators said. Officers fired several shots, hitting Randall. They performed life-saving measures until emergency responders arrived, but Randall was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while the Winter Park Police Department will also investigate any related crimes that may have occurred within its jurisdiction.

The officers involved have been placed on leave, which is standard procedure in such investigations.

Earlier, just before 2:30 p.m., SKYFOX flew over the area near the Fields BMW Winter Park car dealership. About a dozen police vehicles were scattered on the street.
