The Gina Furtado Project releases “Pigtails and Sugarcane”

“Pigtails and Sugarcane” by The Gina Furtado Project is a poignant piece of music released by Mountain Home Music Company. The track highlights Gina Furtado's unique banjo style, backed by her sisters Malia on fiddle and Lu on upright bass, Wayne Benson on mandolin, and Drew Matulich on guitar. Furtado's clear, soulful vocals enhance the song's personal touch and showcase her talent for memorable melodies and unconventional themes.

Inspired by Furtado's observations of her immigrant neighbors and her experiences in Honduras, “Pigtails and Sugarcane” addresses the struggles of migrant workers. Its relaxed waltz rhythm and lilting melody capture the essence of a Central American village while honoring the difficulties of migrant life.

The Gina Furtado Project, led by the innovative banjoist known for her work with Chris Jones & The Night Drivers, brings a fresh perspective to bluegrass music. Furtado grew up in Front Royal, Virginia, and has made a name for herself in the bluegrass community. The band features guitarist Drew Matulich, and sisters Malia and Lu Furtado, each of whom brings their own expertise.

Drew Matulich, from Asheville, North Carolina, has toured with artists such as Billy Strings and Roland White. Malia Furtado, who has a classical violin background, plays and teaches bluegrass fiddle, while Lu Furtado provides harmony vocals and bass.
