Stratford-Summerville game ended after false alarm | News

GOOSE CREEK – Reports from a group of students that someone may have fired a gun or was planning to do so led to the disruption of the Stratford-Summerville high school football game, police said.

A school security officer radioed in a report of “possible shots fired,” and police evacuated the stadium on Crowfield Boulevard, Goose Creek Police Chief LJ Roscoe told The Post and Courier. It was soon determined that no one had fired a weapon.

“Nobody heard any gunshots. There are no shell casings. There's nothing there,” she said. “We stopped the game to find out what happened and get to the bottom of it.”

Goose Creek Police later released additional information, saying the department “received a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired during the football game. … Officers responded to the scene and evacuated the stadium. However, no shots were fired … and no one was injured.”

“We will provide further information as our investigation progresses.”

It was the opening game of the season for both schools. The game was called off at halftime with Summerville leading 28-14.

Summerville Green Wave Football posted a message on Facebook following the incident, which reads, in part:

“Today’s Stratford ballgame has been suspended indefinitely due to unforeseen circumstances in and around Stratford High School and Stackley Field.

“The match was abandoned after the end of the first half… Spectators were asked to leave the stadium at this point.

“The safety and well-being of our student-athletes, fans and community members is our top priority.”
