Bail set for grandmother in death of baby placed in front of air conditioner with wet blanket

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/Gray News) – Bail has been set for the grandmother of a baby who died of hypothermia after being left wrapped in a wet blanket in front of an air conditioning unit earlier this month.

A judge in the US state of Georgia set bail for Diane Seright at $50,000 on Friday.

On August 6, three people were arrested, including Diane Seright, the baby's mother, 19-year-old September Seright, and 39-year-old Antonio Nash.

The trio was charged with second-degree murder and child abuse.

According to an arrest warrant, the baby was left in a car seat in a hotel bathroom, wrapped in a wet blanket, while September Seright was in the shower.

The mother then placed the child in front of the air conditioning for “an unknown period of time” while she lay on a couch and the other two lay in a bed.

The baby, later identified as three-month-old Josiah Noel Seright, was eventually pronounced dead at the hospital.

At the bail hearing, District Attorney Jared Williams called the case “puzzling” and the public defender called it “horrifying for everyone involved.”

Williams said Diane Seright said September Seright was “extraordinary and developmentally slow.”

Williams accused Diane Seright of abandoning the baby by not caring for and nurturing her own daughter.

“Nobody in the hotel room had the sense to check on the baby sitting in front of the air conditioner,” Williams said.

According to authorities, Diane Seright was the person who called 911 that day.

September Seright's bail hearing was postponed Friday to give public defenders more time.
