“I am being framed…”: Sanjoy Roy, accused in the rape and murder case in Calcutta, protests his innocence in court: report

Sanjoy Roy, the prime suspect in the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, broke down in a Kolkata court on Friday and this time protested his “innocence”. Roy, who has been in custody since his arrest by Kolkata police on August 10, was visibly upset when the judge asked him about his consent to a lie detector test.

During the hearing, Roy stated: “I have not committed any crime. I am being blamed. Maybe this test will prove it,” the Times of India reported.

His comments came as he agreed to undergo a polygraph or lie detector test, which can only be conducted with the permission of the court and the consent of the suspect. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had produced Roy in court and sought permission for this test for him as well as other suspects connected to the case.

The court granted Roy's request for a lie detector test and sentenced him to 14 days in custody. He reportedly collapsed during the proceedings, further strengthening his protestations of innocence.

In addition, the court has also approved polygraph tests for Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and five others, including four doctors who had dinner with the victim on the night of the tragic incident.

The gruesome incident took place on August 9, when the aspiring doctor was raped and murdered in a medical college seminar room. Authorities reported finding numerous cuts and wounds on her body, sparking a huge public outcry and protests across the medical community.

In response to the brutal crime, doctors' associations across India shut down all scheduled services, including outpatient clinics and non-urgent surgeries, for 11 consecutive days. The strike ended only when the Supreme Court intervened and asked doctors to resume their services.

Sanjoy Roy's arrest came less than 24 hours after the crime. Investigators linked him to the crime scene through video footage and the discovery of his Bluetooth headphones nearby. In addition, allegedly explicit content was found on his mobile device, raising further doubts about the suspect's involvement.
