Logan Sargeant crashes heavily in practice for the Dutch Grand Prix and misses qualifying

ZANDVOORT, Netherlands (AP) — Logan Sargeant was involved in a serious accident during practice for the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday. His car caught fire and was badly damaged, causing him to miss qualifying.

Sargeant appeared to lose control of his Williams after one wheel hit the wet grass at the entrance to a right-hand bend before drifting left and slamming into a metal barrier.

Sargeant was uninjured and walked away from the car as flames spread from the rear and smoke poured out of the air intake.

The race, which took place in wet conditions, was almost immediately stopped with the red flag before marshals put out the fire and loaded the car onto a truck.

Williams worked on the car and said the chassis “looks OK at the moment”, but the team did not have it ready by the time Sargeant was able to take part in qualifying.

It is the latest in a series of accidents involving the only American Formula 1 driver. Sargeant crashed at the Canadian Grand Prix in June and collided with Kevin Magnussen at the Miami Grand Prix in May. He also crashed during practice for the Japanese Grand Prix in April.

Sargeant is will be replaced at Williams by Carlos Sainz Jr. for 2025.

The Dutch Grand Prix takes place on Sunday.
