NYPD arrests suspected shooter in sneaker reseller murder – NBC New York

Police said an arrest had been made in the investigation into the murder of a popular sneaker reseller who was shot to death in SoHo in June.

Javier Osorio-Mejia, an established reseller of high-end sneakers in Bayonne known as Upscale Cracc, was tracked to the city where he was killed in an attempted robbery, police said after his death.

Osoio-Mejia was with a woman at a club in Queens, which the couple left in the early morning of June 25. Police believe they were followed as they left the club and ambushed around 5:15 a.m. on Greene Street in SoHo.

Osorio-Mejia was shot three times in the right leg and died. The killer fled in a black SUV with unknown license plates. It is not clear if anything was stolen. The victim was driving a Range Rover.

On Saturday, police announced the arrest of 35-year-old Jayquan Straker of Poughkeepsie. He was arrested two days earlier on charges of murder, robbery and illegal possession of weapons.

Further details about a possible motive and the circumstances that led to his arrest were not initially known. Nor was there any information about the alleged shooter's lawyer.

Upscale spoke with Ashley Chaparro of NBC New York in 2023 about his life and career.

Numerous tributes have been posted on social media in memory of Upscale Cracc.

Complex Sneakers posted: “Rest in peace, Upscale Cracc, born Javier Osorio-Mejia, a reseller who was a mainstay at sneaker releases in New York City for years. If there was a line, Cracc was there.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
