Fighting food shortages in the Mobile region

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – A special event was held in Foley on Saturday to raise awareness about the issue of children and hunger.

It was called Strike Out Hunger and was a fundraiser for a group called Secret Meals for Hungry Children.

The event took place at the Gulf Bowl in Foley.

Food packages have been prepared for children in the community who suffer from food insecurity.

The program helps over 2,500 children by discreetly distributing food packets into children's backpacks while they go to school.

Alabama Credit Union and Coldwell Banker Coastal Realty sponsored the event.

Elizabeth Cole of Alabama Credit Union said, “This year we probably had over 20 companies support the event. That's why we have 17 schools and 17 elementary schools in Baldwin County participating this year and we're able to feed over 600 people.”

According to organizers, the event raised over $45,000.
