Queensland volunteer firefighter seriously injured during hazard mitigation fire test

A Queensland volunteer firefighter suffered severe burns when she was caught in a grass fire caused by fire hazard mitigation measures.

The woman, in her 60s or 70s, was burning with another Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) volunteer in Maidenwell, near Kingaroy in the South Burnett region, on Thursday afternoon when both got into difficulties.

According to LifeFlight, she suffered numerous burns. The company sent a rescue helicopter to the scene of the accident to fly her to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

The other volunteer, a man the same age as the injured woman, suffered minor burns and was taken by ambulance to Kingaroy Hospital.

He was released from the hospital on Thursday evening.

“RFSQ Deputy Chairman Ben Millington and I met with the family last night and expressed our support on behalf of the entire Queensland Fire Service and the RFSQ,” Fire Service Commissioner Steve Smith said.

“Their comrades and members of the neighboring brigade are also receiving support.

“Our primary focus at this time remains on the injured volunteer members and supporting their families and crew members.”

The fire department is investigating the incident, while workplace safety authorities have been notified.
