Domestic disturbance call leads to shooting involving police officer

HUNTERSVILLE, NC – The SBI is investigating a police officer-involved shooting in Huntersville.

According to investigators, all this happened after the suspect hit a police officer with her car.

Huntersville Police responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute around 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning on Cordial Lane.

When officers found the suspect, 44-year-old Amanda Benton, in a car, she said she accelerated and hit a Huntersville police officer.

That officer fired at Benton's vehicle, striking her. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Two officers from Huntersville were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.

Investigators assume that there is no longer any danger to the public and are not currently looking for any further suspects.

Benton faces a number of charges, including the following:

  • Second degree kidnapping, felony
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, serious crime
  • Simple assault, 3 counts of misdemeanor
  • Deprivation of liberty
  • Domestic violence
  • Resistance against an official
  • Attack with a deadly weapon
