1 dead and 2 injured in traffic accident in Cullman County

A woman was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 65 in Cullman County on Saturday afternoon, Alabama State Police said.

Mirra Bride Dot Popee Chafin, 21, was killed when the 2007 Ford Mustang she was driving went off the road, into a ditch and overturned, according to a news release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Another woman, Lara A. Phillips, was a passenger in the vehicle. Phillips was injured and flown by helicopter to UAB Hospital in Birmingham; Chafin was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the crash, the unoccupied Mustang reentered traffic and was struck by another driver, Suzanne E. Woods, 56, who was driving a 2014 Toyota Sienna. Woods was injured and taken to UAB Hospital.

Neither Chafin nor 23-year-old Phillips were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were ejected from the vehicle, state troopers said.

The accident occurred on Saturday around 6:30 p.m., about seven miles south of Dodge City in Cullman County, on Interstate 65, at mile marker 293.

The state police investigation into the accident is ongoing.
