Identity of man revealed who died after falling from paddleboard at Quail Creek Reservoir

Authorities have identified the 49-year-old man who died Friday after falling from a paddleboard on Quail Creek Reservoir.

Cedar City resident Pedro Castillo was out paddling with his wife and daughter around 4:30 p.m. on August 23 when strong winds sent all three into the water. Cedar City police said neither of them were wearing life jackets at the time.

A nearby ranger from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation responded immediately after seeing the paddle boards blown away.

The ranger and a passerby who offered help managed to rescue Castillo's wife and daughter, but Castillo was reportedly found lying face down in the water.

After Castillo was transferred to the ranger boat, CPR was performed. It is estimated that he was underwater for about 30 seconds before help arrived.

Despite life-saving measures and the assistance of other first responders, Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at around 5:15 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.

“The Utah Division of State Parks extends our condolences to Pedro Castillo's family and friends,” the agency said. “We also want to thank other agencies assisting in the loss, including the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, and Intermountain Life Flight.”
