Colts defender unexpectedly released in first wave of roster cuts

The Indianapolis Colts announced nine roster moves before Tuesday's deadline to reduce the roster to 53 players.

Among the nine players released was safety Ronnie Harrison Jr., which is quite surprising since the veteran seemed to be leaning toward being added to the roster.

One of the Colts' biggest concerns heading into the season is the safety position. While Julian Blackmon returns on a one-year deal, there are many question marks about the position opposite him.

It looks like Nick Cross will be the starter to begin the season, and fellow third-year defender Rodney Thomas II will also be in the mix.

With Harrison released, Trevor Denbow's spot on the roster seems secure given his ability as a special teams star.

Other players the Colts released in the first wave of roster moves include releasing WR Tyrie Cleveland, DE Derek Rivers and WR Greg Ward. Meanwhile, CB Clay Fields III, K Spencer Shrader, QB Kedon Slovis, WR Derek Slywka and LB Mike Smith Jr. were released.

The Colts have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to complete cuts to the initial 53-man roster.
