Oxford man charged with fatal accident involving 10-year-old child

An Oxford man is facing involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of a 10-year-old child who died from injuries sustained in a multi-car crash near Gillette Stadium on Saturday night.

State police said 42-year-old Michael Escolas was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee “at a high rate of speed” around 8:30 p.m. when he ran a red light into a Nissan Altima near the intersection of Route 1 and Interstate 495.

Police say Escolas stole the Jeep from a parking lot near Gillette Stadium, where country singer Kenney Chesney was playing a concert.

The Nissan he crashed into contained a family of six – two parents and their four children.

All six suffered serious injuries, state police said. A ten-year-old among them was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

In a statement, state police said that in addition to the Nissan and the Jeep, three other cars were damaged in the accident.

Escolas was also taken to a nearby hospital with injuries, where he remains in custody, state police said.

In addition to the manslaughter charge, Escolas is also accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and car theft, among other things.

The Norfolk County Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the accident.

“We extend our condolences to the family for the loss of their child,” state police wrote in a statement. “Due to the child's age and out of respect for the family, we will not be releasing his identity during this difficult time.”
