The Tigers are entering their second season under freeze and hope that the additional familiarity will help them a lot. Quarterback Payton Thorne was mediocre a year ago, but Freeze has noted that much more of the playbook will be available this year as he understands the system better now.

Thorne should have at least some better options to work with this year than he has had in the past at Auburn. That starts with former five-star-plus freshman Cam Colemanwhich could make a big difference when it comes to making up the huge points lead at the start.

Coleman was an outstanding person from the beginning and said: he develops a good relationship with Thorne at this point.

“My connection with Payton Thorne has definitely grown a lot,” Coleman said. “Our chemistry on and off the field, just getting to know him as a person. As I get to know him as a person, he gets to know me better and I get to know him better.”

“I told him how much I like the ball being thrown and he told me where he wanted to be on certain routes. So it's really about building that chemistry.”

That chemistry will be important. Just as important is the restructuring of the defense. Auburn finished 2023 at a fairly mediocre 43rd place nationally in defense and 47th in total defense.

Experienced linebacker Eugene Asante should help lead a unit that is looking to improve at every level. There is plenty of experience across the board, with as many as seven seniors potentially starting on defense.

Auburn will look to take a big early lead against Alabama A&M at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and SECN+.
