Cedar Rapids woman's home in crossfire of shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Ricochets struck homes, cars and even a passerby during a shooting in Cedar Rapids over the weekend.

Among the houses affected was Isabella Burns.

This shooting occurred Saturday night around 11:15 p.m. in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue SW.

Burns has lived here for four years.

“We come from Cambridge Townhomes, which was very busy, and we always thought this was the safer option, but that's hard to believe now,” she said.

According to Cedar Rapids police, the Burns family home was caught in the crossfire when gunfire was exchanged between two vehicles. Officers found two vehicles and three homes struck by gunfire.

“There's a bullet hole right in the gutter. There's a bullet hole in our front door that went through our wall and pierced it,” she said.

Burns added that Cedar Rapids Fire Department came to her home to shut off a gas line that had also been hit by gunfire.

Cedar Rapids police said one person suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the foot. Burns said it was her neighbor who was wounded in the toe.

“My neighbors were in danger and that is not okay.”

Thoughts about what could have happened to her also shocked Burns.

“I mean, it was immediate terror,” she said. “Nothing can replace that … except the loss of security.”

Investigators are asking anyone with information or camera footage from the area to call 319-286-5491.
