Jerod Mayo gives update on Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett's injury

The New England Patriots still seemed to be in competition for the starting quarterback ahead of Sunday's season finale.

The game got off to a rocky start when veteran Jacoby Brissett fired a shot after Washington Commanders edge rusher KJ Henry sacked the New England quarterback. Brissett suffered a shoulder injury and played in just one series before giving way to rookie Drake Maye.

Despite his injury, head coach Jerod Mayo explained that a short start for Brissett was the plan for the Patriots when they came into the game.

“That was the plan,” Mayo told reporters, according to a video provided by the team. “We were going to let Jacoby play a series or two and bring Drake in.”

Regarding the shoulder injury, Mayo said Brissett “could have continued playing if needed” and that they would contact him on Monday.

“I talked to him, we'll see tomorrow,” Mayo said. “You always feel a little sore the next day. He said he was fine. We'll find out tomorrow.”

Mayo had previously stated that the Patriots could make a decision about their starting quarterback for Week 1 as early as Monday or Tuesday after this game.

Does this still apply to Mayo and the New England Think Tank?

“That's always the goal,” Mayo added. “As I always say, I reserve the right to change my mind. Still, we have to watch the film. We arrive at three in the morning. We'll see if I can watch the whole film on the plane.”
