1 person dead after gang shooting in Millcreek

One person died after being shot outside a Millcreek residence Sunday afternoon.

According to Unified Police, the incident occurred at 2:30 p.m. at the Monaco Apartments on 500 East, approximately at 4100 South.

A man who lives in the complex told FOX 13 News he tried to save the man.

“I heard about five shots. I sent my kids into the back bedroom and ran outside. I looked around,” said Nicholas Turley.

Turley said his wife spotted the victim from the balcony.

“While she was on the phone with 911, I approached the shot victim. The gun was lying next to him,” Turley said. “I moved it down a few feet and was instructed by 911 to turn him over. So I turned him over, lifted up his shirt and discovered his gunshot wound. I applied pressure to the wound and had my wife take over while I performed CPR until paramedics arrived.”

Police said the person shot died at the hospital. This was tough news for Turley after trying so hard to help.

“It definitely makes you think. My biggest concern here is that I have children. That's when I started thinking: What if they were playing out here?” he said.

Police believe the shooting is related to gang violence. No description of the suspect has been released yet. The victim of the shooting has not yet been identified.

“The Unified Police are asking anyone in the area and local residents who have cameras to investigate and call us at 8018404000 with that information,” said UPD Detective Angie Oldham.

There have been several shootings in the Salt Lake Valley in recent weeks that police say are related to gang violence. On Aug. 3, gang members were suspected of killing a teenager and wounding others in a shooting at the Mount Olympus trailhead. A week later, two people were injured in a gang shooting at State Street and Exchange Place, police said. Turley said today's incident has shaken his children.

“They're a little scared about it. I taught them how to handle guns. They've been around guns. They've shot guns. They were definitely worried. The little one, she's nine years old, cried a little bit, but they're OK,” he said.
