On Sunday evening, charges were filed at Mohammadpur police station against 13 people, including deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, for the killing of Mahmudur Rahaman Saikat on July 19.

The victim's father, Mahabubur Rahamn, filed the case as plaintiff after waiting at the police station for more than eight hours.

Sharina Afroz Supti, the victim's elder sister, told New Age that they had to wait for more than eight hours to open the case as the police showed no interest in taking it up.

“We were finally able to file the case around 11:30 p.m., although we didn't go to the police station until about 3 p.m.,” she said.

When asked about the delay in taking up the case, Mohammadpur police station's senior police officer Iftekhar Hasan said he took charge of the police station as the new OC on Sunday.

“The filing of the case was delayed due to the absence of the OC. The Inspector (Investigation) was not sure whether to take up the case or wait for my cooperation,” the OC added.

He claimed that they filed the case around 6:30 p.m. and the time was also mentioned in the case statement.

Other prominent accused in the case include former Jute and Textiles Minister and Awami League Presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad A. Arafat, former Inspector General of Police Choudhury Abdullah Al Mamun and former Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropalitan Police Biplab Kumar Sarkar.
