Horror at funeral: Five relatives shot dead in murder-suicide on Long Island after family gathered to pay their last respects to mother

  • Police responded to a call about gunshots shortly before noon
  • Officers found a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the lawn
  • Four more victims were found dead in a tiny blue house

Five relatives were shot and killed in a tragic murder-suicide as the family gathered at their mother's Long Island home following her funeral.

Police said they responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired on the quiet cul-de-sac off Wyoming Court in Syosset just before noon Sunday and found a man on the front lawn with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers then found four more victims dead in the small blue house – which they were planning to sell after their mother died last week, Newsday reported.

The identities of the victims had not been determined as of Sunday evening, but land records show that the house was last owned by 95-year-old Theresa Martha DeLucia, who was buried on Friday.

According to News 12 Long Island, it is now believed that one of her sons, who lived in the house with DeLucia, killed his siblings and family members before shooting himself in the front yard over a dispute over the sale of the house.

“The mother had just died and they wanted to sell the house,” real estate agent Mary Macaluso told Newsday.

She said she was going to meet relatives at the house around noon, but when she got there, the street was already closed.

“The kids were all here for the funeral and they asked me to come see the house,” Macaluso said, explaining that one of DeLucia's children asked her to meet with the family so they would know what to do before putting the house up for sale, which is valued at nearly $900,000 on Zillow.

The family wanted to have the assessment done quickly because two family members had traveled from Florida for the funeral and would soon be on their way back, she noted.

But the suspect, believed to be in his 60s, had lived in the house his entire life, and according to ABC 7, neighbors said the loss of his home was simply unbearable for him.

“I didn't think he would take his whole family and siblings with him,” a neighbor told Fox 5 New York.

“I thought maybe he was desperate and just did this to himself.”

Other neighbors reported hearing gunshots and were still shocked by the gruesome scene.

“First I heard it was a murder followed by suicide, and that's pretty bad,” Mike Steffens told ABC 7. “And then I heard that four people were murdered and then there was a suicide. You don't hear that very often, especially not in your own town.”

Another resident, Wendy Paisner, described the murder-suicide as a “tragedy for the family” in her statements to NBC 4 New York.

Nassau County police say they cannot identify the victims or the shooter, nor can they provide a possible motive or say whose weapon was used in the shooting.

They will release further information on their results on Monday.
