Passerby is said to have been shot at the end of a fight

A bystander was shot early Monday morning while reportedly trying to break up a fight.

Shortly after midnight, an argument broke out outside a convenience store in the 2500 block of Kensington Avenue, 6ABC first reported. Police said they reviewed city security camera footage and saw several people outside the store. As the argument began, a woman who appeared to be in her 30s stepped between two people before one of them allegedly opened fire, fatally striking her.

The woman was taken to Temple University Hospital and died shortly after 12:30 a.m. Her name was not released, but police said it appeared the shooter was not aiming at her when he opened fire.

“It appears that the person struck by the gunfire was an unintended target attempting to break up or intervene in a fight between the shooter and another person. This person was apparently the person the shooter intended to shoot,” Officer DF Pace told 6ABC.

Police are currently searching for more surveillance footage to identify the shooter, who is still at large. They do not currently believe there is a threat to the public, CBS3 reported.

In order to curb crime, Kensington currently has a curfew from 11 p.m. However, restaurants with a license to serve alcohol are allowed to stay open until 2 a.m.
