Selma High School student dies during tragic weekend for city

SELMA – A high school student from Selma died on Friday during a tragic weekend in the “Queen City of the Black Belt.”

Au'Terrious Walter, a 16-year-old sophomore at Selma City Schools, died Friday, Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd announced on the school system's Facebook page.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our high school students, Au'Terrious Walter, who passed away Friday night,” Byrd wrote. “This is a difficult time for all of us as we process this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and classmates during this incredibly difficult time.”

The post did not mention how Au'Terrious died. His death is the second death of a city teenager in 24 hours. On Saturday, Morgan Academy quarterback Caden Tellier died in a Birmingham hospital. The 16-year-old suffered a severe brain injury during the private school's home opener Friday night and was flown by helicopter to a Birmingham hospital.

Byrd said counselors will be on-site at city schools this week.

“In the days ahead, it is critical that we come together as a community to support one another and honor the memory of this bright and promising 16-year-old student,” Byrd said in the statement about Au'Terrious' death. “This young man showed so much potential and his absence leaves a void that will be felt by many. His loss is a profound tragedy for the entire school community.”
