In the original 1984 decision, the court established that when a court reviewing an agency's actions is tasked with enforcing an ambiguous law with more than one reasonable interpretation, it must defer to the agency's reasonable interpretation of the law. This latest decision requires courts to make those interpretations instead, with potentially broad implications for agencies across the country.
