Paul Finebaum: Florida State is in trouble, but College Football Playoff hopes still alive

How much blame does he deserve? Evaluation of Florida State Seminoles QB DJ Uiagalelei against Georgia Tech

Paul Finebaum does not believe that the College Football Playoff is unreachable for State of Floridaeven after the demoralizing defeat against Georgia Tech Institute in Ireland.

In the latest issue of Stand up on ESPN, Finebaum explained that during Mike Norvell The team's spirits may be broken, and they need to get back on the horse and regain their motivation. For the Seminoles, the season is far from over.

“No. I mean, they're not in great shape, but the hyperbole has to stop for a few minutes because, Greeny, a loss doesn't end the season,” Finebaum told Mike Greenberg when discussing whether Florida State's CFP hopes went up in smoke in Ireland. “It's a conference loss, and I think that's the most important thing because in the new world, the ACC champion would end up getting a playoff spot. So that puts them in a problematic situation.”

“I think Florida State is ultimately in trouble because of its schedule. They have Notre-Dame later, which plays for the at-large bid. They also have Miamia number of other important games, including Clemson. So they're in trouble. And you know, their fans aren't going to be able to fight their way into the playoffs this year like they tried to do last year.”

That's the reality for Florida State – as Finebaum essentially put it, the Seminoles still have their destiny in their own hands. If they can win against their toughest competition, Norvell and Co. will likely do enough to make the playoffs.

Despite his enthusiasm for Florida State's chances at the CFP, Finebaum couldn't resist making a few jokes at their expense after their loss to Georgia Tech. He said the Seminoles should be Judge Judy during an appearance on SportsCenter over the weekend if they want to make it.

“I always expected a lawyer to come into the middle of the field and sue Ireland or Guinness,” Finebaum said of SportsCenter“Florida State always looks for someone else to blame when things don't go their way. We saw that last year when they blamed the media. Then they started suing their own league. That was really the worst possible start for a team that so many people expected to make the playoffs.

“I realize this isn't over yet, but after their performance yesterday, especially on offense, this team better call Judge Judy or somebody because I don't think they're going to make it. I mean, getting steamrolled by a mediocre ACC team – that was music to the ears of a lot of Florida State haters.”

Ultimately, Florida State can still recover and make the playoffs despite the loss to the Yellow Jackets, but Georgia Tech has certainly made the whole situation a little more difficult for the Seminoles in 2024.
