Freshly released California felon arrested in Newport for threatening woman

NEWPORT, Oregon (KPTV) – A man recently released from a California prison on attempted murder charges was arrested in Newport for pointing a gun at a woman and threatening her, the Newport Police Department (NPD) said.

On Saturday, the NPD was called to Elizabeth Street around 1:30 p.m. for a domestic dispute involving a firearm.

When police arrived, they learned that the suspect, 22-year-old Brandyone Salazar, had loaded a gun, pointed it at a woman and threatened to kill her.

Salazar was recently released from prison in California, where he was convicted of attempted murder.

The woman escaped Salazar and ran to the lobby of a nearby hotel, where she hid. Staff called 911.

Salazar tried to escape and ran towards the beach. With the help of the Lincoln City Police Department and the Nix Canine Unit, Salazar was found after about two hours.

Salazar was arrested on the following charges:

  • Threatening
  • Criminal possession of weapons
  • Illegal use of weapons
  • Pointing a firearm at another person
