Why is Cyclone in Coney Island closed and when will it reopen?

If you've ever seen Coney Island's iconic Cyclone, you know it's as impressive as it is terrifying—and we're not just talking about its signature 85-foot drop. On a normal day, the nearly century-old wooden ride looks (and sounds) like it could fall apart at any moment.

Well, it wasn't all just my imagination: The roller coaster was closed indefinitely over the weekend due to some legitimate safety concerns. That's… scary?

Last Thursday, the Cyclone stalled mid-upward and passengers were forced off the ship because of a broken chain in the engine room, CNN reported. Thankfully, no one was injured.

The Department of Public Works (DOB) found the park guilty of two violations: first, for lack of maintenance of the attraction and second, for not immediately informing the city about the damage, according to Gothamist.

The DOB has not yet announced an exact date for the roller coaster's reopening, but has stated that the Cyclone must remain closed until all necessary repairs have been made.

The Cyclone first opened in 1927 and has undergone extensive maintenance in the past. In fact, the city had planned to shut down the attraction in the 1970s before it was restored and reopened at a cost of millions of dollars. Then, in 2015, the Cyclone stopped abruptly and became stuck near its peak when the drive belt slipped off the drum, as the New York TimesNo one was injured in this incident either.

Due to its age, repairs to the roller coaster are not uncommon, but they are usually carried out quite quickly.

“The Coney Island Cyclone is a 97-year-old roller coaster that is meticulously maintained and tested daily,” a Luna Park spokesperson said in a statement to News 12. “It is not unusual to stop and evacuate a ride when an issue arises for the safety of our guests. We will reopen the Cyclone roller coaster when repairs are complete and the ride passes DOB inspection.”

For now, you can still enjoy the other rides and entertainment that Luna Park has to offer, including the family-friendly Tony's Express and the 90-degree dropper Thunderbolt.
