Berkeley County man charged in death of child

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) – South Carolina law enforcement has charged a Berkeley County man in the 2020 death of a child.

According to arrest warrants, 30-year-old Caleb Jochen Carter of Moncks Corner is charged with two counts of injury to a child and two counts of intentionally abandoning a child.

SLED spokeswoman Renée Wunderlich said Carter was charged on Friday.

An affidavit states that on or about October 13, 2020, while in Carter's care, the child suffered bruising to several parts of her body, including her chest, ear, eye and jaw.

Carter also, alone or in concert with another person, inserted or allowed an “unsafe mouthpiece” to be inserted into the child's mouth, which resulted in an obstruction of the upper airway and caused the child's death, the arrest warrant states.

Officers took Carter to the Edgefield County Detention Center. A photo of the detention center was not immediately available.

The 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office will prosecute the case, Wunderlich said.
