A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty in Baltimore District Court to shooting his ex-girlfriend's uncle last June.

Tavon Jones was initially charged with attempted first- and second-degree intentional murder and assault, use of a firearm in a serious violent crime, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, carrying a handgun, carrying a loaded handgun, carrying a handgun in a vehicle, carrying a loaded handgun in a vehicle, illegal possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm in Baltimore City for a shooting that occurred on June 28, 2023 in the 5300 block of Valiquet Avenue.

In court on August 26, Jones accepted prosecutors' recently amended guilty pleas to first-degree assault and use of a firearm during a serious violent crime. For first-degree assault, Jones must serve 25 years, with all but five years suspended. For use of a firearm during a serious violent crime, he must serve the mandatory minimum sentence of five years, with no possibility of parole concurrent with the assault charge. Upon his release, Jones must spend two years on probation, register as a firearms offender, and stay away from the victim.

Judge Levi S. Zaslow accepted Jones' guilty plea, but the attorney agreed to postpone sentencing until February 2025.

Defense attorney Brad MacFee asked the judge to allow Jones to serve his sentence under house arrest because Jones has already served 400 days of house arrest without a single violation. Judge Zaslow declined to make a decision Monday, but asked the attorney to be prepared to discuss the issue at sentencing.

According to charging documents, Jones and the victim got into a fight at his ex-girlfriend's house after the victim kicked him out. Jones later drove his car alongside the victim's and shot the victim with a .38-caliber bullet, which punctured his car's tire. No one was injured in the shooting.
